Animal Farm in 2013

Animal farm
Animal Farm is an allegory of the Russian revolution, which is represented by the characters and the events. As we go through the chapter 2, 3 and 4 we can see how the characters of animal farm resemble the principle figures of the Russian revolution either Napoleon to Lenin, Boxer to the proletarian or Mr. Jones to the Tsar. Also in chapter 4 the conflict between the humans and animals represent the first battle between Bolsheviks and Mensheviks.
The character of Boxer represents the proletariat, in other words the working class in the Russian society. He is persuaded by the leader in this case Napoleon that the communism regime is necessary to achieve a more equal and justice world, an example of this is the 7 commandments “All animals are equal”. This also can be associated to the type of thinking of Karl Marx, who believes that the proletariat should be the owners of the factories because they are the ones who produce goods and services. Boxer works really hard, even he volunteers to extra labour to such extreme that his personal motto is ‘I will work harder!. He as the other animals in the farm depend in their leader because they don’t have the capacity to act on
there own or to make decisions due to their low education.
Propaganda is something that we always have around us, it’s part of our daily lives. The government tells us many different things. It manipulates us to think like them and do what they want us to do. One recent example of propaganda use is what is currently happening in China. There is going to be a trial to decide what is to happen to a political figure, but this trial doesn’t seem to be only  trial. It appears to be a political move from part of the government. They show themselves as if they were doing the right thing for the town. They are doing the things that re in their interests and hiding it by saying it is for the town.

In what ways does Major use rhetoric in his speech and what impact does this have on the animals?

Old Major’s speech aim is persuade and convince the animals that the bad treatment they receive from Mr. Jones must end. His only way of achieving his goal was using rhetorical devices such as contrast, rhetorical questions and tricolon.

The rhetorical questions Old Major use, make the animals think about the suffering conditions they are living because of human treatments. As we can see on page (p5) “And you, hens, how many eggs have you laid in this last year, and how many of those ever hatched into chickens?” This shows how Mr. Jones takes benefit of the products animal provide, for human consumption. In this way Old Major persuades the animals to carry out a rebellion against human because its time that animals be free and work for their own interest.

Old Major use contrast to describe the huge difference between the humans and animals nature. He wants them to realize that humans trained animals to work according only to their interest. “Man serves the interest of no creature except himself. And among us animals let there be perfect unity, perfect comradeship in the struggle” (p6). In this quote Old Major says that the humans only see from their own interest, they don’t care about others besides them, on the other had animals are more united, they put aside their needs and take as a priority the needs of the others.

Tricolon is use to give examples to demonstrate the bad treatment animals receive. He wants that the animals understand that the only animal enemy is the humans, because they take advantage of the animals for their own benefit.  “To that horror we all must come-cows, pigs, hens, sheep, everyone” (p5). In this quotation we can see how Old Major shows them the unfortunate future that awaits to every one of the animals in the farm if they don’t do something to prevent it, as soon as possible.

In brief Old words Major uses the rhetorical devices to encourage the animals to carry out a revolution against humans. He thinks its time that the animals be free and work for their own interest. Humans only look for their interest taking advantages of what animals provide.

Animal Farm, an introduction

My favourite animal character in the book “Animal farm” is Clover the mare. She is motherly, affectionate and generous with al the animals in the farm. Her relationship with the other animals is really pleasing because she has a maternal aspect that makes her take care and worry about others without caring about who it is. For example when a brood of ducklings that had recently lost their mother were cheeping for fear of being stepped on, she decided to snuggle the ducklings in her foreleg. She was thrilled as soon as she heard the Old Major’s speech. When the Old Major started to sing ‘Beast of England’, her and all the animals started to follow him singing by heart without even knowing the lyrics of the song. Without a doubt she enjoyed the song because the song described a world without humans, without suffering and fields with different types of plants. Clover is my favourite animal character because I love how she takes care of others and how she is a fighter. Despite the fact that Jones took away her four foals when they were only one year old and that she would not see them again, she doesn’t give up.
