How does Napoleon use his power to control the animals?

Napoleon uses techniques such as: propaganda, intimidation and lies to maintain his position of leader and his supremacy over the animals. Now that Snowball has left, he doesn’t have any obstacle in his way of making of the farm whatever he wants.

Propaganda has a big role in Napoleon’s achievement of power; through it he has the advantage of manipulating and brainwashing the animals to think in a certain way. The animals, due to their short memory and intellectual efficiency, fall under the ignorance of believing everything Napoleon states with Squealer’s help. As seen in chapter 3, “Milk and apples contain substances necessary to the well-being of a pig…Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones will come back!” (p25). Squealer makes the animals believe that they require the consumption of apples and milk to complete their work, but the real reason is that they only look for their own interest and personal health.

As we can see in chapter 5 Napoleon is a very smart animal, he instills fear with the objective of giving the animals no chance to express their displeasure about the new changes he has made in the farm  “Four young porkers in the front row uttered shrill squeals of disapproval... But suddenly the dogs sitting round Napoleon let out deep, menacing growls, and the pigs fell silent and sat down again.” (p40). Napoleon took Jessie and Bluebell’s puppies to train them as his army and defeat him of anyone who opposes his authority as the leader.

In chapter 6 we can identify animalism, Napoleon and the other pigs have taken control of the farmhouse as their residence, in spite the fact that it was the opposite of what Old Major outlined in his ideas. “No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets” (p50). Napoleon changes the 4th commandment, the one which was based in the prohibition of using beds, for his own self-interest.

Finally: the Admirable Animals Show The Other Side Of The Coin

(1)Farmers with weapons on hand wanted
to get back the farm no matter what it cost

Yesterday in the Battle of Cowshed, unfortunately our comrade, the sheep, was killed at hands of the brutal humans when he was doing the honorable and admirable task of enforcing our rights. Without a doubt he is an inspiration to all of us, it’s thanks to him and the courage of Boxer ‘the hero’ that we achieve the great dream that once had Old Major, before dying.Today our comrade the sheep will receive a solemn funeral, a little speech by Snowball and military decoration of ‘Animal Hero, Second Class’ for his valuable exploits.
                                                                                                                                (2) Ducks were abused by the brutal humans

“War is war. The only good human being is a dead one.” said Snowball without mincing words, in the recent meeting we had with him. Snowball told us with lots of detail the events that take place in the Battle of the Cowshed, how he planed this well organized ambush against humans with strategies from the book of the famous writer Julius Caesar’s campaigns, as he was in charge of the defensive operations and how ‘Animal farm’ succeed. He wasn't tired of repeating hundreds of times that he was really proud of his comrades as they quickly obeyed his orders and gave heart and soul to achieve the victory.

(3) Dead sheep in his courageous exploit

The general Alcatraz, an expert in war strategies and defensive operations since he participated in the Second World War, explained to us that the victory was due to the animals’ well organized strategies and firm leadership; all followed the orders in couple minutes without questioning.

Animal Farm in 2013

Animal farm
Animal Farm is an allegory of the Russian revolution, which is represented by the characters and the events. As we go through the chapter 2, 3 and 4 we can see how the characters of animal farm resemble the principle figures of the Russian revolution either Napoleon to Lenin, Boxer to the proletarian or Mr. Jones to the Tsar. Also in chapter 4 the conflict between the humans and animals represent the first battle between Bolsheviks and Mensheviks.
The character of Boxer represents the proletariat, in other words the working class in the Russian society. He is persuaded by the leader in this case Napoleon that the communism regime is necessary to achieve a more equal and justice world, an example of this is the 7 commandments “All animals are equal”. This also can be associated to the type of thinking of Karl Marx, who believes that the proletariat should be the owners of the factories because they are the ones who produce goods and services. Boxer works really hard, even he volunteers to extra labour to such extreme that his personal motto is ‘I will work harder!. He as the other animals in the farm depend in their leader because they don’t have the capacity to act on
there own or to make decisions due to their low education.
Propaganda is something that we always have around us, it’s part of our daily lives. The government tells us many different things. It manipulates us to think like them and do what they want us to do. One recent example of propaganda use is what is currently happening in China. There is going to be a trial to decide what is to happen to a political figure, but this trial doesn’t seem to be only  trial. It appears to be a political move from part of the government. They show themselves as if they were doing the right thing for the town. They are doing the things that re in their interests and hiding it by saying it is for the town.

In what ways does Major use rhetoric in his speech and what impact does this have on the animals?

Old Major’s speech aim is persuade and convince the animals that the bad treatment they receive from Mr. Jones must end. His only way of achieving his goal was using rhetorical devices such as contrast, rhetorical questions and tricolon.

The rhetorical questions Old Major use, make the animals think about the suffering conditions they are living because of human treatments. As we can see on page (p5) “And you, hens, how many eggs have you laid in this last year, and how many of those ever hatched into chickens?” This shows how Mr. Jones takes benefit of the products animal provide, for human consumption. In this way Old Major persuades the animals to carry out a rebellion against human because its time that animals be free and work for their own interest.

Old Major use contrast to describe the huge difference between the humans and animals nature. He wants them to realize that humans trained animals to work according only to their interest. “Man serves the interest of no creature except himself. And among us animals let there be perfect unity, perfect comradeship in the struggle” (p6). In this quote Old Major says that the humans only see from their own interest, they don’t care about others besides them, on the other had animals are more united, they put aside their needs and take as a priority the needs of the others.

Tricolon is use to give examples to demonstrate the bad treatment animals receive. He wants that the animals understand that the only animal enemy is the humans, because they take advantage of the animals for their own benefit.  “To that horror we all must come-cows, pigs, hens, sheep, everyone” (p5). In this quotation we can see how Old Major shows them the unfortunate future that awaits to every one of the animals in the farm if they don’t do something to prevent it, as soon as possible.

In brief Old words Major uses the rhetorical devices to encourage the animals to carry out a revolution against humans. He thinks its time that the animals be free and work for their own interest. Humans only look for their interest taking advantages of what animals provide.

Animal Farm, an introduction

My favourite animal character in the book “Animal farm” is Clover the mare. She is motherly, affectionate and generous with al the animals in the farm. Her relationship with the other animals is really pleasing because she has a maternal aspect that makes her take care and worry about others without caring about who it is. For example when a brood of ducklings that had recently lost their mother were cheeping for fear of being stepped on, she decided to snuggle the ducklings in her foreleg. She was thrilled as soon as she heard the Old Major’s speech. When the Old Major started to sing ‘Beast of England’, her and all the animals started to follow him singing by heart without even knowing the lyrics of the song. Without a doubt she enjoyed the song because the song described a world without humans, without suffering and fields with different types of plants. Clover is my favourite animal character because I love how she takes care of others and how she is a fighter. Despite the fact that Jones took away her four foals when they were only one year old and that she would not see them again, she doesn’t give up.
